Childhood Toys: Gender Influenced or Just Fun?

by Jessica De Leon on May 8, 2009

When I read interviews or blog posts of MTF transsexuals, I often come across this type of statement. The person says that as a child, she loved playing with dolls, playing dress up, or playing house. Makes perfect sense. Most MTF transgendered people feel like they are females born in the wrong bodies, but most MTF crossdressers feel like men with strong feminine sides.

What I actually have never read or heard about is the toys/games that MTF crossdressers played as children. I’m sure that someone has written about this before, but just in case, here is some of my story.

I think my first big toy obsession was He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. I had many of the figures, vehicles and playsets and was devoted to the cartoon. Well, one day Mattel decided that He-Man should have a sister, and this sister She-Ra should have her own spinoff brand. All I know is that I had to have She-Ra in my collection, after all, she was He-Man’s sister! My mother and I were at Toys-R-Us and I vividly remember us in the checkout line purchasing the doll/action figure. Can you believe that I actually felt nervous when we were buying it? Chalk another point up to society’s standards.

Anyway, I was delighted to bring She-Ra home and have her interact with her brother and all of his friends. As opposed to all the Masters figures, she actually had doll hair similar to Barbie. They ended up having many adventures together.

Fast forward to a few years later, and Ninja Turtles were all the rage. I had so much fun setting up battles and pizza time, but one thing was missing. The turtles didn’t have girlfriends! Occasionally, I would borrow four of my sisters Barbie dolls and the car, and make the turtles go on dates! At this point in my life, I didn’t feel any embarrassment due to playing with these dolls. I suppose that it was logical to me that these four ninja dudes needed female friends.

So, do you think I played with both boy and girl toys because of my crossdressing feelings? I honestly don’t know if that was a catalyst or I was just trying to have fun, but perhaps gender identity did play some sort of role for me back then. The one truth that I am sure of is that I had lots of fun.

I still have these toys back home in my closet, maybe one day I can pass them on to my children.

I wasn’t much for dolls, in fact I found them rather creepy. However I did have an extremely large collection of Ninja Turtle toy and yes April was in my collection. I was a rough n tumble kind of kid but I I found girls clothes just to so much better, i mean guy clothes are just boring.

I will never know. My father would have so humiliated me for playing with anything that resembled a girl doll, and I would have been so terrified of that humiliation, that there is just no way I would have allowed myself to find out.

If it was a girl’s thing, or if it had pink on it, I couldn’t even pick it up to put it in the toy box, lest I be caught with it in my hand and suffer mercilessly. Even if it belonged to someone else. (And of course it did, there is no way I would own a girls thing or something with pink on it. For all the reasons I have stated.
Sad I know.

I’m sorry to hear that your father humiliated you like that. I know my own father would say things like “boys don’t play with dolls”, but then again most fathers said things like that.

It’s really coincidental that you commented because I just got off the phone with my mom and she brought up this post because she read it recently and was trying to recall that day when she took me to Toys R Us.

Thanks for sharing Teena :)

@Michelle

Glad to meet another rabid Ninja Turtle collector, I still have all of mine. I know boys clothes can be very boring :)
