Mainstream: Japanese Guys In Skirts

by Jessica De Leon on September 18, 2009

Every day it becomes more apparent to me that Japan is the place to be if you are a man that enjoys dressing like a woman. It is quickly becoming the land of the rising crossdresser, indeed. Special thanks to Lena Sayers for sharing this link with us.

A trend among Japanese boys that is spreading rapidly is the wearing of skirts. This style is so hot that even fashion houses are starting to churn out skirts made specifically for guys.

I have to admit that it would be really cool to be living in Japan or at least visting and being able to take advantage of wearing a skirt in public. On the other hand, I wouldn’t buy a skirt actually made for a guy. It just doesn’t seem right (I’ll delve deeper into this in a future post).

So, what do you think of this trend? Will you be the first to help this style make its way to your country ;) ? Are you planning to go to your favorite travel website and buy your plane ticket to Japan (after reading this post, of course)?

Land of The Rising Skirt! I like that Jessica, but we shouldn’t be surprised at this new trend, from the land that gave us “bras for men”.

Asians have a distinct advantage over most western males, in that they don’t have very strong secondary male characteristics. No wonder they look fabulous in a skirt!

Thanks, Melissa! Japan seems to be a bit more open as far as clothing conventions go. I remember reading about the bras for men a while ago, very cool.

This did kind of start to come in to fashion when I was in high school in the 90′s (wow it has been that long it for that to sound like a long time ago). It was and is for the most part is part in this country a part of the Goth sub-culture. I wished that when I was in high school that I had the guts to try it ( or admit I liked to crossdress). I never could get in to the Goth thing. I would love if it made it in to main stream fashion here in the U.S. As for the skirt for guys while not really the same thing I love my utilikilt.

I do remember that trend within the Goth scene, which I was not a part of either. It would be very refreshing to see a popular skirt fashion wave here, though there would probably be a huge backlash.

> I wouldn’t buy a skirt actually made for a guy

I think I know what you mean by that. I mean if the point (or perhaps more accurately, the fun) of cross-dressing is making yourself look like the fairer sex, why wear a man-skirt? :)

Thanks for give me some credit. You gotta to love the Japan! As I say in the other comment they have so many things related with crossdressing in their culture, for example I started myself again in crossdressing (after a long hiatus during my teenage days) for the “Crossplay” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossplay) in which you not only dress up as a “anime” or “manga” (japanese cartoon and comic respectively) character of the opposite gender, also, in order to be a really good “cosplayer”, you have to take the personality and mannerism of the character, in other words a really good impersonation. Of course because of the androgynous nature of many male characters in anime, in this community tends to be more female to male crossplayers than the other case around.

I agree that I too would not want to wear skirts or dresses made for guys… :)

I love that men’s skirts & panties break gender stereotypes like pants for women did several generations ago. But these are androgynous fashion items for men, not CDs. Androgyny isn’t crossdressing. Where androgyny seeks to erase gender boundaries, CD is about crossing from one gender to another. I do cross-gender behavior as a way to experience femininity, to feel like a woman. Still, if a trend like this makes CD more acceptable and less risky, bring it on!

Challening gender stereotypes sounds like a CD-friendly idea, but maybe CDs need gender stereotypes in order to do what we do. A world where we all wore gender-neutral tunics sounds bland: no pretty feminine fashions to see, and fewer options for all of us.

Great perspective and one that I echo in this: If skirts and dresses were universally acceptable for either gender to wear, would I want to dress anymore? Of course, we’ll never know, but it’s interesting to ponder.

Great. I’m tired of gender hypocrisy too. It’s unfair that men can’t dress/act like women in the same way the opposite occured some decades ago. Especially since it usually works so well.

Yea, I rather like the way the skirts look too :)

I think some thoughts are very good. I personally can’t follow the CD theory, but follow the idea that the gender hypocrisy is already dead…. if some more men would wear skirts.
I wear skirts as a male teacher – questions? Non of my students had any questions bcause they all know me, married, 5 children, and after an accident I have to wear support stockings – under pants impossible, would make it worse through the heat: so what? Skirts and kilts….. and all is fine!

Even not so many students are smiling because of IB and AP courses, they have every day compliments for me. Never I received compliments expect two times when I bought a new tie. Very different with skirts, believe me.

Thanks Jessia;
Much more experiences now sice starting wearing skirts. Overall so far: Skirts looking better on men than we thought in past. It is just the first time, it might look strange. Students voting pro skirt for men: 68%, 32% undecided or no. A result never I expected.
