Mainstream Crossdressing: Myrtle Urkel

by Jessica De Leon on October 3, 2009

What happens when you have a sitcom with one of the most recognizable characters in all of television? Well, if you were a producer on Family Matters, that meant spinning-off new personas in order to milk the original for all it was worth.

In addition to the lovable yet clumsy Steve Urkel, Jaleel White played a cooler version of himself (Stefan), a splice of himself and Bruce Lee, and a Southern Belle named Myrtle Urkel. One of the reasons that White began playing different roles was probably due to the fact that he didn’t want to be forever typecast as Urkel, although for all intents and purposes that’s what happened.

Myrtle was obsessed with Eddie Winslow and long desired to enter into a romantic relationship with him, going as far as disrespecting Eddie’s girlfriends.

So, the big question is, was Myrtle Urkel just another in a long line of characters meant to drum up laughter simply based on the novelty of a man in a dress? In my opinion, no. I was a devoted watcher of Family Matters and I always saw Myrtle as her own, albeit crazy, person and at times forgot that it was a man underneath all the clothes and makeup.

Of course, you may have your own opinion on it and that’s fine too :) . In any case, here are some darlin’ clips of Ms. Urkel doing what she does best, being outrageous.

I like that she held her own in arguments and fights, they called her ugly and she called em ugly right back ;)

I think that was cool too. Like, yea Myrtle isn’t the best looking but she thinks the world of herself and defends her beauty :)

This brings back memories, thanks posting these sweetie. I agree with Lindsey, Urkel did such a good job as Myrtle . I also forgot that it was man at times, these are as always, fun as ever.
Love Always,
