It’s time for our series of posts here at Jessica Who?, titled “Word of the Week”. In these short articles, from here on out published each Friday, I will explore the various labels and umbrella terms used to label us. By doing this, I hope to educate not only myself, but also anyone who may not be familiar with these terms. Feel free to add your own knowledge to each post by leaving a comment
. The label that we will be examining is: gender bender
Standard Definition
A person that behaves and dresses like the opposite gender.
Derogatory?
Not presently.
What’s It Really Mean?
A gender bender is anyone who challenges the traditional views of gender whether it be in appearance, mannerisms or expression.
My Take
I look at gender benders as anyone who crosses that line of what society traditionally expects from that gender role. In essence, this is not limited to crossdressers.
People that challenge gender stereotypes are cool in my book regardless of what label they associate with. Sometimes this is done as a self-expression and other times to blatantly rebel against silly traditions.
Of course, when a man ‘gender bends’ it is more often than not frowned upon by most of society. Whether it be clothes or behavior, most men are expected to follow traditional male roles to the letter.
I consider myself a gender bender, do you feel the same way about yourself?
Your Take
Have you anything to add? Please leave your take on this word in the comments section, I hope we can open up a dialogue and learn from each other while educating the masses.

Don’t get me started on the old double standard here — women can walk down the street in their boy friend’s clothes, complete with jockey shorts, and no one bats an eye. BUT – - – - – -
~~~~sigh~~~~~~
I am in an English Country Dance group, 80 % women. Some women wear a short necktie to indicate their male role in the dances.
I am all in favor of gender bending although I am far from full time cross dressing. skirt and blouse is about as far as I go – no make up, no wig, strictly in the closet so far. What would you expect from an 87 year old man with little CD experience.
