Crossing The Web: Hong Kong, Illinois, Tampa & Movies!

by Jessica De Leon on November 21, 2009

bridgeIt’s time for this week’s installment of Crossing The Web,  a weekly series posted each Saturday featuring news and happenings from around the TG world. In many cases, these stories aren’t much more than a headline but in others there is much more depth to be found.

One major goal of this series is to keep myself and you all informed on news that you may have missed or want to recap.

This week we have some government ordinances, pictures of celebrities playing transgenders and lots of birth certificate action.

Hong Kong Hypocrites?

In Hong Kong, a MTF trans woman is suing the government for rejecting her marriage with her male partner even though the SRS was paid for by them and performed in a public hospital. There seems to be an issue with the government not allowing gender changes on birth certificates, so this woman has been denied on the basis that this is a same-sex marriage.

Tampa Anti-Discrimination Ordinance

Over in Tampa, Florida, the city council put into effect an ordinance that protects transgenders from prejudice and discrimination. This covers housing, jobs, and accommodations. A little late, yes but at least it is in place now :) .

Updated Birth Certificates Easier in Illinois

Back in my home state persons who have had SRS overseas can now amend their birth certificates to reflect their proper gender. Before this, only trans folks who had surgery on US soil could change their Illinois certificate.

Celebrity Transgender Movie Roles

In some lighter news, ABC news has put together a fun and quick little slide show of fifteen different transgender characters played by various celebrities. Movies from Tootsie and Madea to Boys Don’t Cry and Rage are featured.

My Take

Good news in Illinois and Tampa but over in Hong Kong obviously things need to change. Hopefully they will soon. I enjoyed the slideshow of pictures put together by ABC.

Also, here in WA state referrendum 71 passed after being put to a vote allowing domestic partnerships all of the same legal rights as marriage, at least within state lines. The first time this has passed in any state after being put to the population’s vote, quite exciting

Jessica, descrimination is everywhere and the article about the Tampa Bay city council proves that their are still many good christian people on this earth. I am a crossdresser, a good christian and I believe in equal rights for all human beings. Good job Tampa bay!!
Jessica, continue to look and find justice to make all us girls feel safe among each other. We are all equal in God’s eyes, right?

There are those who say the WA referendum passed only because it was written in a very convoluted manner. Whatever.

Thanks for these posts, sweetie. You make it so much easier to keep up with what’s going on in the world!
