Exploring My Creative Side

by Jessica De Leon on November 2, 2009

Soundesign tape deckWhen I was a kid, I spent much of my time creating all types of media.

During my elementary school years I would use my stereo (boombox) to create my own custom cassette tapes. Among other things, I recorded my friends and I playing video games, comedy sketches, song parodies and even my own radio station.

Shortly after staring the 6th grade, I began drawing looney tune style comics starring me and the kids in my classes. They actually got popular enough that I would create on weekly and xerox a few copies to distribute to my friends.

The culmination of my childhood creativity came during 8th grade when my music professor instructed us to film a music video. I paired up with my best friend (at the time) and another kid and using my parents’ camcorder, a keyboard and a cordless microphone we created our production. Making the video was an absolute blast and I still have the cassette.

I was also fortunate enough to have a computer as a kid. BASIC was the first programming language that I learned and using this knowledge I created text-based computer games. This led to a fascination with computer programming which eventually became the focus of my studies in college.

Software Engineering is certainly a passion of mine and while there is certainly room for creativity, it simply isn’t on the same scale as the things I mentioned above. So for the past several years my thought processes have heavily favored the technical aspect of life.

My foray into internet media has given me the opportunity to reclaim and sharpen my creative side which has made such a positive impact on my life. Writing articles and designing websites has become a new passion of mine and has acted as a throwback to my childhood days.

Blogging is fun and I count myself very fortunate to be able to share my ideas with you. Having an audience motivates me to get those creative juices flowing on a regular basis and no matter where I am, if inspiration strikes then I take a moment to make a note of it in my journal.

I just wanted to take the time to say that I am grateful to each and every one of you who read my blog. The comments and messages that you send my way letting me know that you enjoy my blog really make it worthwhile and motivate me to keep going.

Thank you for helping me rediscover my creative side.
