Mainstream: Orlando (1992 Film)

by Jessica De Leon on November 25, 2009

A little over a month ago I posted about a movie called RAGE which featured Jude Law playing a MTF transsexual not to mention famous transvestite Eddie Izzard and none other than John Leguizamo a.k.a. Ms. Chi Chi Rodriguez. Little did I know that this wasn’t Sally Potter’s first time directing a film with gender bending characteristics.

In 1992, she was at the helm for the shooting of Orlando, Potter’s adaptation of the famous Virginia Woolf novel. The twist here is that Orlando, who inherited a huge lot of land, riches and a castle, becomes a woman overnight!

Once this happens there are claims from the people that she was always a woman and therefore has no legal ownership of the properties. The trailer can be found below:

On December 2nd, 2009 the British Film Institute will be hosting a career retrospective of Sally Potter (the first ever for a British female filmmaker) which kicks off with a screening of Orlando, now remastered in High Definition.

Immediately following the screening, there will be a Q&A session with Ms. Potter set to be broadcast on the internet! Viewers will have the opportunity to participate by sending in questions via Twitter.

This takes place at 8:30 UK (3:30 PM EST) time at www.sallypotter.com

It sounds like a great opportunity to connect with someone who has the vision and position to be able to challenge gender norms on the silver screen.

Its a good film, I remember Quentin Crisp as Queen Elizabeth early on giving a great performance as well.

Must get round to looking at the book someday.
