Word of the Week: Genderfuck

by Jessica De Leon on November 6, 2009

It’s time for our series of posts here at Jessica Who?, titled “Word of the Week”. In these short articles, from here on out published each Friday, I will explore the various labels and umbrella terms used to label us. By doing this, I hope to educate not only myself, but also anyone who may not be familiar with these terms. Feel free to add your own knowledge to each post by leaving a comment :) . The label that we will be examining is: Genderfuck

Standard Definition

This is another one that is not in any official dictionary.

Derogatory?

No.

What’s It Really Mean?

Someone who practices genderfuck is essentially making their appearance extreme in terms of gender presentation for the purpose of boldly challenging male and female roles. They may incorporate both feminine and masculine characteristics as they defy what is “normal” and “expected” of their birth gender.

My Take

I admire anyone who mixes genders in their appearance, behavior and anything else because I am totally against gender stereotypes. Individuals who practice this do it to offend, defy, open minds, raise conversation and everything in between.

I immediately think of Jeffree Star when the word genderfuck comes to mind, but there are indeed less extreme ways to go about this. In any case, I find it interesting and noteworthy when people stay true to themselves.

Of course, this could become a very deep and reflective article, but I’ll keep it brief. There are crossdressers who choose to go the whole nine from head to toe and there are others who are a bit more selective in how they crossdress (for instance, they may not use a wig or makeup). Both cases could be considered “genderfucking” depending on how you look at them, but the more clear example would be the crossdresser who does not wear a wig.

This is yet another example of leaving behind society’s expectations in order to express yourself how you see fit. As long as you’re not hurting anyone (in any way!) I believe everyone should be free to show their true spirit.

Your Take

Have you anything to add? Please leave your take on this word in the comments section, I hope we can open up a dialogue and learn from each other while educating the masses.

I just want to say, again, how much I appreciate these articles, Jessica. You present the information in a clear and open way, very informative without becoming “preachy”. Thank you, sweetie, and keep up the good work.
Muah!

Genderfuck presentation seems to make some transgender people as anxious as it does the cisgendered; only there it’s more like some fear of weirdness-by-association: “Why can’t you be a NORMAL cross dresser? With your bald head & make up, that cocktail dress and those combat boots you’re gonna get us both in trouble, so stop that!”

Genderfuck doesn’t thrill me, I don’t really understand it (and yet for some reason I seem to get where “furries” who want to be part human and part some other species are coming from…); but I figure it’s their business not mine, and they wouldn’t do it if they didn’t feel a need that’s as valid as my needs, and anyway it’s kind of cool that theres such a diversity of gender expression, and when we can all be ourselves…
~~~hugs, Laika
(Oh, and how about Cisgender for a word-of-the-week? An odd word because I’ve never heard a cisgendered person use it…)
In general I dislike the term “fuck” alone or as part of another word. To me it indicates penis to vagina intercourse but lately it has become much more inclusive. I don’t like it.
Anything that breaks down the silly gender stereotypes we have in our society, gets the thumbs up from me.
having recently watched the movie Year One, I think the character played by Oliver Platt pretty much sums up genderfuck to the extreme…if you’ve seen it, you know what I’m talking about and probably had nightmares about it like I did.
