When society speaks of crossdressing, it is usually implied that the discussion is about men dressing up like women. Female to male crossdressing is vastly underrepresented, especially in the media, but “Just One of the Guys” is a film that centers around it.
This Lisa Gottlieb directed film features Terri Griffith, a hopeful journalist, feeling that her talents are being overlooked simply because she is a female. In response, she assumes a male identity and signs up at a different high school. She embarks on her own cross-dressing experiment and hijinks ensue.
Being an 80s movie, “Just One of the Guys” is chock full of radical cheesiness, quirky humor and awesome tunes. The obvious male – female dichotomy is highlighted several times and the situations that Terry finds herself in become quite hilarious.
I found this to be a funny movie and both my wife and I enjoyed it. Please note that since neither of us has a firm grasp on what it is like to be a FTM trans person, we cannot offer any comments about whether or not that film traverses any offensive boundaries. In my novice opinion, I doubt it but I could certainly be way off base.
In any case, I think this is a good flick and definitely worth a rent (or a free viewing online
).
At the moment you can watch the film in its entirety — for free — on Hulu by clicking this link.

Seems like there was a time in the mid – late 80′s when cross dressing was The Thing. This film for one, and also LITTLE SISTER with Jonathan Silverman and Alissa Milano; TOOTSIE, JUST ONE OF THE GIRLS with Corey Haim (RIP) – just to mention a few.
Oh – JUST LIKE A WOMAN – Adrian Pasdar!
More to add to my movie queue, thanks!
Females are given so much more license when it come to self expression, than males. There are whole lines of “menswear” clothing made exclusively for women, but females are not limited to male styles tailored just for women, they are also perfectly free to wear actual male clothing, without any stigma being attached whatsoever. The only females that are ever considered to be cross dressers are hard butch lesbians, who in addition to wearing men’s clothing, sport men’s haircuts, and an obvious male swagger.
So true, Melissa
I found the movie fun not only because of the subject, but because it was filmed at my high school (which was torn down shortly after). My nephew even has a part as an extra in the prom scene. I do remember thinking when I first saw the movie (I was not out, even to myself yet) that she was lucky to be able to switch back and forth so easily, though that is the source of some of the funny bits of the film…..Stephanie
Oh, that’s cool! Yea, the movie is great, I’m probably going to add it to my collection
Don´t forget to see Switch (1991) with Ellen Barkin too! Also great post! =) Keep it up the good work girl!
Will do Lena, thanks for the suggestion
