Please forgive me for the following indiscretion: before Sunday, March 14th 2010 I failed time and time again to see the classic film “Some Like It Hot”. While it had been on my list of movies to see for quite a long time, I just never got around to it.
Subscribing to an online movie rental service has a way of kick-starting these things, and my first choice was the Billy Wilder masterpiece. When I popped in the disc I did have a basic idea of what the movie was about but nothing significant, this was going to be a fun ride.
For those of you who haven’t heard of this flick, “Some Like It Hot” stars Marilyn Monroe and both Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon adopting female personas, “Josephine and Daphne” in an effort to join an all-female band. The two musicians, Curtis and Lemmon, bear witness to a mafia killing and decide to hide out by disguising themselves as females.
The very first time Josephine and Daphne hit the screen dressed as women, I couldn’t believe my eyes. They truly looked like girls and moved around pretty well! However, the surprises didn’t stop there. During the film, I found myself laughing hard at the jokes and situational humor. The acting was terrific and the direction was superb. I’ve seen crossdressing movies before, but this by far is the best.
Apparently, I’m not the only one who feels this way. As I stated above, I knew little about this film before I watched it, but as I am wont to do after I view a movie for the first time, I look it up on wikipedia. “Some Like It Hot” won the Golden Glove for Best Motion Picture (Comedy) and is commonly regarded as one of the best (if not the best) comedy of all time.
Typically, I’ll enjoy a movie with crossdressing as a main element — even if the film itself sucks. This one, though, exceeded my expectations significantly. If you have yet to experience this classic first-hand, take the first opportunity and do it. You won’t be disappointed and will almost surely find yourself quoting the characters and laughing the whole time.
Now, if only they would release it on blu-ray with some special features

This is the best comedy of all time and has proved it by it’s staying power. It is as fresh and funny as the day it was made and is the one film I never tire of. how could you take so long to find it?

I knew about it but just never really got around to it, probably because I play way more video games than I watch movies
…
I have the latest DVD release which does have some special features. By far the best is an interview with Tony Curtis (done, I believe, sometime in the early 2000′s) with Leonard Maltin (movie critic extraordinaire) that is entertaining as well as insightful. It also has a feature with some of the ladies who made up “Sweet Sue’s Society Syncopaters”.
Anyway, I am SO glad you finally got to see this classic, sweetie. What’s next – JUST LIKE A WOMAN? (another of my personal favs)
Peace
Julie Michelle
Thanks Julie, hopefully they’ll convert that edition to blu ray soon, if not I’ll bite and grab the DVD.
I’ll add “just like a woman” to my queue and hopefully will see it soon
I found that movie to be so entertaining. The ending made everyone leave the theatre with a smile on their face. You have a hard time not putting yourself into the situation of the entire movie.Marilyn will always be a favorite of mine. She was just so sexy.
I know right? Amen to everything you said
One of the best comedy films and one I cant help but stop and watch if it appears on television.
Yep!!
I agree, I own this movie, and my girlfriend loves it as well. It definitely is one of the best comedies of all time. Other good movies with CD (crossdressing) elements that I personally recommend include, La Mala Educacion (The Bad Education), Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Soldier’s Girl, Kinky Boots, and Too Wong Foo. There are others, but these are a good start. Also as for video games, what video games do you play? Just curious to see what video games you may play, as I play COD myself. =]
I love ‘To Wong Foo’, also one of my faves. I’ll have to check out the others, thanks for the suggestions!
The video games question is a bit tough to answer, I own all of my original systems (NES, SNES, Playstation 1 2 & 3, GameBoy, GameCube, Wii, Dreamcast, Atari 2600 & 7800 and a few more)…I play a lot of retro games but some of the newer ones I’ve taken on include Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Hot Shots Golf Out of Bounds, Street Figther IV, Wario Land Shake It, New Super Mario Bros Wii, and a bunch more!!
