A Wig Interlude

by Jessica De Leon on March 4, 2010

Window fullWhile driving around town the other day, I happened upon a costume shop that was having a big sale. Later that evening, it dawned on me that costume shops sell, among other cool things, wigs! I told my wife that I would head over to that store the next day to rummage through the clearance merchandise to see if I could find any cool accessories.

As luck would have it, they had a ton of wigs for sale (all of them were at least 50% off the sticker price) and I took my time to decide whether or not I would add any of them to my personal collection. There were so many to look through – everything from Goldilocks to Michelle Obama. Of course, they also had the wacky stuff – giant clown wigs and raggedy ann yarn hair.

Among the giant selection I saw some wigs that were somewhat practical (in that I would actually wear them) and different from what I normally choose. Since they were so inexpensive and interesting, I ended up picking up two very distinct hairpieces.

Both are from “Michele’s Wig Collection” and boast Professional Quality, as denoted by the gold star sticker on the front :) . They’re also washable and supposed to be one size fits all, but we’ll see about that one because I have a large head. I’m sure they’ll fit, though they may be a bit snug.

The first one is a honey blonde long wig aptly named “Dreamgirl Wig”. I’ve never tried the blonde route, so I’m interested to see if I’m able to pull it off with any sort of grace.

The second wig is much shorter and is natural red. This one is called the “Supermodel Wig”. Right. Anyway, this is my first short hair wig and it will be interesting to see how this one works out.

Hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to try these out very soon and share the results with you all. If I really like them, I may have to purchase a couple more wig stands ;) !

Good luck on the fit. I wear a large cap size, which is 23″ in circumference, and have only been able to find one decent wig with relatively long hair, that actually fits. I can wear the ones that say average/large, but after about a half an hour, I feel like I’m wearing a very tight fitting hat. Forget about average size wigs, which seem to be the prevailing size that most wigs come in. The ear tabs wont even come down far enough to cover the hair on my temples. I have found a beautiful long human hair page in a large size by Wig Pro, but they want about $750 for it! I would love to find a source of pretty long hair wigs, that come in a large cap size.

Thanks Melissa, believe it or not I still haven’t had the opportunity to try these wigs on!

750, wow, that’s a bit much for some hair — yikes!

Oooh…sassy! I like the natural red wig. Be sure to post the pix once you’ve given them a test drive.

Congrats, sweetie! They both look good – I pray they look good ON, too! I also have a large head, it can be a pain, but when I find a style/brand that fits I try to “stock up”!

Hi Jessica
It always good to increase the choice of wigs, even better if you can do it without breaking the bank. I’ve bought over the internet and I guess it is better to have sight of them first………. one I bought was so much ash blonder than I thought, but that is the risk. Were you able to try them on or did they stay in the packet. Hope they fit and looking forward to the pictures……..

I wasn’t able to try them on as they were on sale, but when I took one out of the package it looked big enough, so we’ll see :)
