Mainstream Crossdressing: NBC’s 30 Rock

by Jessica De Leon on May 4, 2010

How amazing is it when one of your favorite sitcoms features cross-dressing as a major attraction? Freaking awesome is what! Yet again, Tina Fey’s small-screen creation showcases a male actor dressing up as a female, but unlike last time, the “Argus” episode of 30 Rock uses drag as a major plot element.

Jenna Maroney, the self-centered singer/actress and co-headliner of “The Girlie Show” has met a new guy, named Paul (played by Will Forte), and is head over heels. However, sensing something strange going on, Liz and Pete decide to investigate Paul, following him one evening to a nightclub. The surprise they are in for is that Paul…

… is the star of his very own drag show where he impersonate Jenna herself!

Stunned, Liz decides to confront Jenna regarding Paul’s profession, but Jenna already knew and is offended that Liz is not being supportive. Later, Liz has a conversation with Paul about the romance. Warning — some possibly offensive language.

(Sorry, Hulu clips are only available in the US — I apologize for this :( )

P.S. I couldn’t quite make it out, but I think that Paul’s Drag Queen stage name is Gina Baloney.

Although this was a humerous event on TV at least it got people to be exposed to cross dressing and romance all in one show. Now we need a show that stars a cross dresser that is a hit show.

sorry, as a bona fide trans women, “paul” really pisses me off. i hate him and i hate the fact that he looks awful in drag. he’s not even trying! also he calls himself a “shmale” which is extremely offensive
