Mainstream Crossdressing: Shane Dawson

by Jessica De Leon on July 27, 2010

As we know, crossdressing in films, television and theatre are nothing new. What about the internet? Well, comparatively speaking, yes this is a relatively fresh concept, especially when its taken to the level of legitimate entertainment.

I first stumbled upon a Shane Dawson video when I was browsing around YouTube sometime last summer. The video was a parody of Sarah Palin, and featured Mr. Dawson dressed up in a women’s business outfit and singing a song about Palin’s plans.

A Top YouTuber

Since then, I have seen several more of his videos and noticed that he does a lot of characters, including women. His most famous character by far is name Shanaynay (probably inspired by Martin Lawrence Sheneneh) where he dresses up and acts like a stereotypical “ghetto girl”.

Shane is one of the most popular YouTubers, and currently gets millions of views on his videos which span across three channels. He spawns and inspires imitators and copycats all the time and yet continues to improve and keep his videos fresh.

Shane Dawson, Transsexual or Cross-Dresser?

So, the question is presented, and while at first glance it may seem to have a simple answer, depending on whom you ask, you’ll get a different answer. The obvious response is that yes, he is a guy wearing women’s clothing, so that makes him a cross-dresser.

However, others will disagree with that, stating that if this is only something that he does for show and never to fulfill a deeper, more intimate and personal need, then no, he isn’t a cross-dresser. He certainly doesn’t go “all out” with his presentation, preferring a more over the top look that almost lets his audience know that he is not truly into being a girl.

Cross-Dressing is Funny Or Funny is Funny?

While I may not enjoy all of his videos, I do find Shane Dawson’s unique sense of humor refreshing and I check in on his channel from time to time to see his latest updates. Is he an example of someone who uses the whole “guy in a dress” angle to get laughs, or do you think that he is genuinely funny regardless of what he is wearing?

I’d tend to answer with the latter, having seen many of his mini-movies on YouTube. I’m interested to find out what other people think. What do you think of (possibly) non-crossdressers cross-dressing for entertainment?

Do you think acts like this help our community at all or perhaps set us back even further? Leave your opinion below and we’ll open a discussion about it.

In Hollywood even bad press is good press for the stars. You cant buy exposure unless someone does it for you and I think this is the case. The more often people become exposed to something the more comfortable they get with the subject of transgender. U-Tube~~~ keep up the good work.

Just on this note…what do you think of when Jim Carey put on the bathing suit of his then girlfriend and paraded down the beach for the press? Think he’s into crossdressing in real life?
