The Essence of Perfume

by Jessica De Leon on August 13, 2010

mmm untitled bottle 1So, you’ve got a closet full of sexy dresses, flattering skirts, voluminous wigs, defining makeup and even bouncy breast forms. Maybe you need three dressers to house all of your clothes and several cases to keep your makeup organized.

All of these things help with your feminine look and your womanly appearance. You look in the mirror, snap some photos and perhaps even take a stroll out in the real world. However, do you go beyond the two senses of sight and feeling when you get into girl mode?

Is Perfume in your Arsenal?

What I’m getting at is this: once the dress is zipped up, the wig is pulled taut and the final stroke of lipstick is dry, are you ready to rock out as a female, or is something still missing? Does a spritz of intoxicating perfume complete your process?

There’s certainly something very special about a feminine scent. Research has shown that our nose works in conjunction with our minds to elicit all sorts of feelings from danger and repulsion to comfort and love. What role does perfume play for you?

A familiar scent may call to mind the love and support your mother and grandmother give you. An intoxicating aroma may stimulate memories of a racy night you and your honey spent together. On the other hand, is there a flowery fragrance that reminds you of, well, you?

Does Perfume Hold a Special Value?

My wardrobe, while kind of small, does contain a decent amount of feminine articles as well as some of my own makeup products (my wife and I share everything except foundation). Though, because of the nature of what I do — dressing up and staying at home — I rarely even think of perfume let alone use it.

There was, however, my time at Be-All. If I remember correctly, I did use perfume at least once, and it did make me feel a bit more comfortable in myself. Perhaps moving forward it will be something I consider more often, as it is not something foreign to me (I frequently use men’s cologne).

If you do spray the eau de toilette, does it hold special value to you? Are you just not ready until your looking, feeling and smelling like a woman? Is it strictly for personal satisfaction or do you want those around you to bask in your feminine ambiance?

Oh, and one more question. Do you spray directly on your skin, on your clothes or create a cloud of fragrance to walk through?

On the skin but I like it when it clings to outer layers which don’t rush back to the wash.

Actually, I have my own scent Youth Dew by Estee Lauder. I always us it as deoderant no matter how I am dressed, and most of the time it is as a man. I also spray the perfume on both my clothes and body from time to time. It is not an overwhelming scent but I do enjoy smelling pleasant. Love and hugs, Angie

Early in my transition, I remember reading about the importance of fragrance, and I remember not feeling complete until I put on some perfume… especially when dressing for a date. Back then, it was either Chantilly Lace, Sex Appeal, or Anne Klein ($25 for a tiny 0.12-oz bottle).

Now, years later, I still love wearing fragrances. One that seems to get me a lot of nice compliments is Ciara by Revlon… it’s a blend of vanilla and musk. A GG girlfriend gave it to me as a gift.

I also have a nice variety of body sprays. While I save the perfumes and colognes for more “dressier” occasions, I wear body sprays every day… I especially like those with tropical fragrances.

Unfortunately, all of this is all wasted on my boyfriend. He has a diminished sense of smell, so unless I stick something right in his face, he really can’t smell it.

As for your question, I usually spray fragrances directly onto my skin (elbows, shoulders, back of my knees), but sometimes I will also spray it over my head and let it drift down onto my hair and shoulders.

Hi Jessica,

I like to wear perfume but a lot of times I forget to use some. My favorite kind is called “Light Blue” by Dolce & Gabbana. It has a pleasant fragance that is not to powerful.

When I do wear perfume I spray it on my skin and rub it in. I like to wear it cause it just adds the affect of not only looking like a woman but smelling like one too. Which gives me a boost of confidence in itself. :)

Just like American Express, I never leave home without my scent. I faithfully use Shi Perfume for Women by Alfred Sung, it is a nice clean, decidedly feminine scent. I am often asked by other women what perfume I am wearing.

Oh, by the way, I spray it directly on my skin.

OK, Ive been lax on this item. I do everything else but perfume. I think its because when Im changing I have to shower every thime to get the scents out and Im normally in a hurry. I live a very busy life and excess time is not one of my greatest assets. This is something I need to work on.

I regard a good perfume as an essential item.its difficult at first not to use too much,I always get samples on a cards to take it away from the confusion of scents at the perfume counter .Then go back and buy the perfume I like. Its also difficult to know how it will smell when you put it on your body. If you can get someone else to smell what its like plus if you have used too much perfume. A small amount of perfume on your clothing in the wardrobe smells great. Buying perfume in male attire is easy. The salesperson will think you were buying the perfume for a friend. The salesperson will also give advice on which one to buy.
Remember those who have not come out of the cupboard The scet lingers. Afterwards a good shower is needed and maybe a room deodorant to lessen the after smell.

When I schpritz, it’s usually directly on – wrists, behind ears, back of knees. But I don’t do it often, because as hard as some lipstick is to remove, perfume is more difficult.
