Eddie Izzard: Live From Wembley

by Jessica De Leon on September 2, 2010

As an aspiring comedian, I find myself constantly writing, performing and learning. Part of this learning involves watching stand-up acts, either live or taped.

Furthermore, as an aspiring comedian looking to incorporate drag into his act at some point in the near future, I find myself with a perfect role model in Eddie Izzard. Last night I had the pleasure of watching his performance, “Live From Wembley”.

Eddie Izzard Stands Up for Transvestites

We’ve looked at Izzard before, but because I am so deeply involved in the world of comedy presently, he seems to be even more relevant in my life than ever before. Luckily for me, Epix HD on Demand currently has “Eddie Izzard: Live From Wembley” available for free viewing.

His outfit for this performance is fabulous — mini-skirt, fishnets, heels, jacket and a bustier. He also is sporting earrings and some glamorous makeup. He opens with some funny material about cross-dressing, I don’t want to spoil it but trust me it’s hilarious.

Cultural Barrier?

Though I have known about Eddie for quite some time, it was only semi-recently when I began watching his act. I was worried that most of his act would be over my head, since he is British and I am American.

My worries were laid to rest upon watching one of his performances on American soil and completely eradicated last night when I watched “Live from Wembley”. Another thing that I love is that you clearly don’t have to be a cross-dresser to enjoy his comedy. Finally, this is a fairly recent release (2009).

Here is a bit from that show where he talks about Greek Mythology:

Following in Izzard’s Footsteps?

Whenever I talk about my comedy career and the fact that I want to incorporate cross-dressing somehow, Eddie Izzard immediately comes up in conversation. I consider him a legend and if I could ever be a fraction of how good he is, I think I will be in great shape.

I am not the only one, however, as I know a couple of other comics that I met online who cross-dress on stage. Perhaps one day we can all get together for the great Cross-Dresser Comedy Tour 2015? We shall see ;)

You totally should incorporate your femme side. What I find funniest about the videos you have posted is how you humorously illustrate the differences between men and women. I think you have a great opportunity (and talent!) to appeal to both sexes by pointing out the humor in those differences.

I think you can do it, sweetie. Commenting on the differences between the sexes – you could be the Tranny Jerry Seinfeld!!

I really like the idea of a comic Tranny tour. It sounds like fun and I hope that it works out. Keep on being creative.

I heard of him and I own a couple of his DVD’s. I hope they have the BluRay version of them soon. I heard that he’ll stared in a couple of movies I just can’t remember them. And I do like the comedy he does.
