Drag Queens Race to Stand Up for RuPaul

by Jessica De Leon on March 8, 2011

When I looked at the listing for this week’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race, I knew it would be something I’d be interested in watching. Usually, I tire of the antics on the show after a few minutes but this time the drag queens were being challenged to come up with a stand-up comedy routine.

The contestants of Drag Race typically spend the entire hour lamenting over and over about costumes and makeup. However, pens and paper replaced needles and brushes in this particular installment.

RuPaul brought in Rita Radner to help the queens with their routines. She gave them some good advice, like turning inward for sources of the funny. Many of the girls said how difficult it was to make people laugh and I am glad that stand-up was given that respect. For a minute I was worried that it would be either ridiculed or portrayed as something that just anyone can do.

Some of the Drag Racers embodied characters on stage for their routine, one of them was a pimptress and yet another played a crazy Spanish little person. Many of them did make fun of themselves in an effort to win over the live audience, which was obviously padded with extra laughter and applause in post-production.

The “Ru Ha Ha” episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race was definitely enjoyable and twice as appealing to me since it is pretty much what I am trying to do. Now if only Logo could give me a call one day to offer me a 30 minute stand-up special, then we’d be in business. ;)

Here are some bonus scenes from the episode featuring Ru’s Ladyboys.
