Some Monday Updates

by Jessica De Leon on April 11, 2011

Wow, I hardly remembered that it was the weekend, as I kept myself busy both Saturday and Sunday. This past week or so has been almost chaotic for me, juggling everything from the YouTube NextUp contest to my comedy performances. So today’s post will probably reflect that to some degree.

First off, I want to talk about the YouTube competition. My sincere thanks goes out to all of you who took the time to vote for me. I know that time is precious and I certainly realize that I was asking for something that would be very beneficial to me. If nothing else, this was an exciting yet humbling experience. It is nice to know that you are loved by not only family and friends but also a community.

While I haven’t heard anything about the contest results yet, I will definitely post here with the results. Speaking of YouTube, last Friday was the official launch of the YouTube Live platform, which now allows partners to stream live from their computers to chat and interact with friends and fans. They are rolling this out randomly to partners so I expect to have this functionality sometime in the near future.

Again, when I do receive this privilege, I will plan a live show on YouTube and post about it here. I’ve been wanting to do something along those lines for a while but didn’t want to sign up on sites like Blog TV and UStream. My patience has payed off!

The other big thing in my life is my comedy, and last week was certainly a roller coaster ride. Monday kicked it all off, with my Improv class in the evening, followed by a stand-up show at a sports bar. Improv went well and I was pumped for the stand-up show because I was to be the MC (host of the show, does 7 minutes of material to open the show and then introduces every single comic for the night). Unfortunately, due to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship, we had to cancel the show. However, some of us decided to crash an open-mic around the corner. We all did well and it was a lot of fun.

Tuesday brought fresh opportunities. I uploaded a new JessicaWhoHD video to rave reviews. I was feeling good again and ready for my stand-up performance Wednesday night at a different sports bar. Now before I get into that let me tell you a little bit about how my stand-up has been going.

I am now about 10 months into my stand-up career and I have progressed much faster than most new comics do. I do very well in most of my performances, but I never let a good show get to my head. As a student of comedy, I know that I need to keep my head down and keep writing and performing to hone my skills.

That said, I’ve never really bombed (even my first set got decent laughs) and I had been mentioning that to my wife lately. Well, I guess it was premonition and mental preparedness because Wednesday night I came as close to bombing as you can without actually bombing. It was a combination of the comic who went up before me, the MC’s poor introduction of me and whatever other intangible variables that rear their head at comedy shows.

However, I do take full blame for my performance and though I was down, I was not out. Immediately after my set, I discussed it with my good friend, outside of the bar. He gave me some good insight and then another buddy came out and did the same. To top off the night, as I was leaving three audience members told me how much they enjoyed my jokes. So maybe I was harder on myself than I needed to be.

Thursday rolled around and I was focused on the YouTube competition. I called a bunch of news outlets in North Florida and emailed every newspaper I could think of. One network was receptive to my story and invited me for an interview. I got ready, drove down and did it. However, instead of actually airing me, the anchor simply mentioned my name and talked about what I was going for. Another bummer. Then I had another Improv class and I did well and got a lot of laughs.

Friday came and went without much fanfare, I did my last bit of shameless self promotion in every place I could think of — I did everything from calling family members abroad to posting on message boards. Voting ended and I didn’t hear a peep, so I had to put the contest out of my mind and refocus on my comedy.

On Saturday I wrote, filmed and edited two new sketches for my Lulu channel, by the way you can keep up more with my comedy career at my other blog, LuluLOL.com. Then on Sunday, I got together with two of my comedian buddies and we filmed two more sketches. We finally finished around dinner time, but instead of resting I decided that I would film some JessicaWhoHD sketches.

That’s when I hit the wall. As I was trying to get ready, I kept getting frustrated with my eye makeup, and I think that was the signal that it was time to take a break. I decided to lie down on my couch and almost instantly I fell asleep. My break finally came.

But now it’s Monday, and it’s time to do it all over again! Thanks for reading, I know this was a longer post than usual and there isn’t much crossdresser/transgender content in it, but above all else I do want to keep the personal blog aspect of this website intact.

P.S. Every time I think about it, I realize that the thing that basically catapulted me into my comedy career was crossdressing. I bet Comedy Central has never heard that one ;) .
