Over the weekend I saw the highly-anticipated sequel to The Hangover, the aptly titled The Hangover Part II and while I knew there would be hijinks, misfortunes and interesting characters, I had no idea that there would be any transgender people in it.
Some minor spoilers will follow so please do not read on if you haven’t seen the film and intend to sometime soon.
While searching for Stu’s (Ed Helms) soon to be brother-in-law Teddy (Mason Lee), the fellas end up at a strip club and based on an earlier lead begin talking to one of the strippers that they had spent some time with the night before. Her name is Kimmy (Yasmin Lee) and she tells the guys about the encounter she and Stu had the night before.
There are two issues here, however. First, Stu is getting married and has cheated on his fiance and secondly, he was “taken” by Kimmy who is a transsexual lady of the evening. This is revealed not only through the story but also via full frontal nudity.
As is to be expected, there was an odd mixture of laughter, gasping and groaning during this scene, but I have to say this — I was impressed by how the filmmakers decided to handle this situation. When I thought about it, Stu did freak out a bit but not nearly as much as other characters in previous works of fiction have. He didn’t throw up or try to kill himself, he was just feeling some shock and resentment for what he did but there was no act of violence or aggression against Kimmy.
Kimmy was referenced as a “girl with a d***” in a song that Stu later sung, but again, this was mild in comparison to other mainstream media outlets. I expect that there will be a firestorm of controversy surrounding this, but I thought it was well done, all things considered.
Now, my overall thoughts of the movie (in short) — I liked it, but expected much more. I thought the writers and director held back too much and it could’ve been longer. That said, it was still a good movie with great characters.
