Back in early March we talked about James Franco’s appearance in drag (as Marilyn Monroe) at the 2011 Oscars. Though I did not catch the festivities, I was delighted to see the pictures and video featuring Mr. Franco once again getting in touch with his feminine side for all the world to see.
Apparently, though, he was not fully on board with this idea.
In an interview with Playboy Magazine, Franco revealed that the initial plan was for him to sing as Cher (I’m assuming in full Cher wig, makeup and outfit) which would prompt an appearance from the pop music legend. However, since there were no Oscar nominations for her, the backup plan (which we all saw) was Franco walking onstage in a heels and a pink dress.
He wasn’t psyched to do this and does not look back fondly on it either. Not because he was to be in drag (he’s done it before), but because there was no good comedic material to back it up. Producers simply went with the tired and stale “a man in women’s clothing is funny” routine.
So upset was Franco, that he considered purposefully stumbling on stage just to screw the skit up.
While I was happy to see James crossdressing again, though I recall being slightly disappointed that the people behind the scenes didn’t make an effort to make him look better. I wasn’t able to see the routine, just the highlights so I’m not in a position to discuss the act.
