Typically, transwoman roles have gone to genetically female actors, provoking a backlash from within the TG community. Now, it seems, transgender roles are increasingly going to transgender actors.
The New York Times has reported this in an article posted yesterday.
The article touches briefly on the career trajectories of Harmony Santana (above) and Laverne Cox (below).
Also noteworthy is how transwomen are getting to play cisgender females. Personally, I think a character in a movie, television show or YouTube skit should go to the best person for the job, regardless of birth sex. For example, I think transmen should be able to play transmen, cismen or ciswomen. As long as characters are blatantly offensive (blackface, etc) it should be all to the good !
