It’s time for our series of posts here at Jessica Who?, titled “Word of the Week”. In these short articles, published on odd Fridays, I will explore the various labels and umbrella terms used to label us. By doing this, I hope to educate not only myself, but also anyone who may not be familiar with these terms. Feel free to add your own knowledge to each post by leaving a comment
.
The label that we will be examining is: Crossplay.
Standard Definition
Crossplay, a portmanteau of crossdressing and cosplay, is cosplay in which the person dresses up as a character of a different gender.
Derogatory?
No.
What’s It Really Mean?
Cosplay is an artform that involves dressing up in the costume of a character from a comic book, movie, television show or another similar artform.
My Take
It seems like a lot of fun! I would love to try it some day as there are a myriad of characters I’d like to portray

Seems that places like comicon (and the like) would be great to try this out, since 95% of the guests are geeks and nerds (who are already persecuted), it seems like a very accepting place (and people do). I would love to go as a female character (chun-li from street fighter perhaps).
Crossplay is a lot of fun indeed! There’s the challenge of crafting your costume to build the illusion of both the opposite gender and the character you are portraying. Then the thrill of the attention your cosplay will bring with bonus points for crossplay! MtF crossplay is not as common as FtM, so people always appreciate good ones. Anime conventions are the best venue for crossplay and cosplay in general. I’ve crossplayed at comic cons too, but there aren’t as many cosplayers and the character choices are, IMHO, limited relative to anime cons.
