Back in January, we reported on the animated program SheZow, which features as its protagonist a boy who becomes the female superhero SheZow. At the time, it was only being aired in Canada and Australia.
Well, that’s about to change this Saturday when the kids’ show makes its US debut on The Hub, a channel aimed at young children that also features Transformers Prime, My Little Pony, and Animaniacs.
As one would guess, SheZow is causing a bit of controversy in the media and across the Internet.
I watched the show a few months back and thought it was really good, I can definitely see kids getting into this show. The creator of SheZow (Obie Scott Wade) has made it clear that Guy is not a transsexual, but rather cross-dressing when he is fighting the baddies.
It’s always interesting when the topic of gender identity and expression gets brought up, because most people still have such a tough time with it.
While I know how much better my life would’ve been if SheZow had been around, it’s not going to make anyone transgender any more than playing Super Mario Kart made me a reckless driver.
There’s still much progress to be made, and hopefully shows like SheZow will continue to press the debate forward.
As of this posting, you can watch the first episode of SheZow for free, here and the official website is here. We are quite happy that The Hub has brought this show stateside and wish it great success!
